Knoxville on the Tennessee River


Knoxville is a city that sits on the Tennessee River in eastern Tennessee.

World’s Fair Park was the place where the 1982 World’s Fair was held. It later became one of the best-loved attractions in the city.

The park has grassy knolls, fountains, and paved paths for walking. In the summertime, this is the place where you can cool off in the fountains and geysers while enjoying live music events.

The Sunsphere in the World’s Fair Park will give you fantastic views across the city, the Tennessee River and the Smokey Mountains from the observations deck. This 266 ft. high hexagonal steel truss structure, topped by a 75 ft. gold-colored glass sphere was the symbol of the 1982 World’s Fair.

The McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture has Monty the dinosaur on the front lawn welcoming visitors. It offers visitors the chance to get to learn about the local history and archeological background of Tennessee.

The Tennessee Theater dates back to 1928. It was built in the Spanish-Moorish style. Inside you can find the original crystal chandeliers, marble floors, and Asian textiles.

This is the best place to see classic films and Broadway shows and to listen to musical concerts. You can find Knoxville Opera performances here and listen to the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.

The Mabry-Hazen House Museum sits atop beautiful Mabry Hill. It was the home of one of the most famous families living in Knoxville. It dates back to 1858 and has a large collection of antiques that once belonged to the family. The house was also used by the Union and Confederate forces and played a key role in the Civil War.

Knoxville Zoo is home to more than 900 animals. You can see species from all over the world and see such exotic animals as the Komodo dragons and Khaleesi.

There are animal encounter sessions where you can get up close to the wildlife.

Among the other attractions here are the splash pad, a theater, and a carousel.

Old City is the name given to the historic downtown area of Knoxville. Here you can find small coffee houses, art galleries, and enjoy the restaurants. In the evenings you can find live music playing here. This area has some of the most historically significant and oldest buildings in the city.

Ijams Nature Center originally began as a sanctuary for birds. Today it includes 300 acres of land and has become a wildlife preserve and an educational center. It is located 3 miles from the city and puts you in a world with creeks, groves, and hiking trails. There is a rock climbing section and if you like you can take a canoe ride.

Blount Mansion is a home that once belonged to William Blount who was known for signing the U.S. Constitution and for being the Governor of the Southwest Territory. The house dates back to 1792. Today it is a museum with displays about the history of the house and the city.

James White Fort is the home of James White the founder of Knoxville. You can learn about frontier life and enjoy the displays showing cooking, spinning, and the blacksmith trade.

This is a working life museum which also offers special events during holidays.

The Knoxville Museum of Art displays art from the Tennessee area. The artwork is from well-known artists from all over the state and from coming talent.

The Muse Knoxville is a favorite among children. It is a facility that consists of art and science galleries and has themed educational sections like construction, nutrition, and science. Children enjoy interactive exhibits. It also includes a great planetarium.

The Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame has memorabilia from 139 inductees into the Hall of Fame. There are also interactive displays and basketball courts where you can try your own basketball skills.
